The student of medieval poetry could readily parallel these
features. The dolce stil nuovo of Dante and others was
achieved, as Dante explains, by looking within and following the
very contours and process of passionate thought. It is in Canto
xxiv of the Purgatorio that Dante says:
“Count of me but as one
Who am the scribe of love; that when he breathes,
Take up my pen, and, as he dictates, write.”
To which his friend Forese replies:
